Wills, trusts, funeral plans and wishes

Most of us want to be able to leave a legacy to our loved ones and to make our wishes on death known but may keep putting it off, being unsure where to start.

Make a Will

If you do not clarify your wishes in the right type of Will, the state will distribute your estate according to the rules of intestacy that apply at the time. The results are not always what you would expect and can create unnecessary Inheritance Tax (IHT) liabilities.

Making IHT gifts for IHT planning

By maximising any annual IHT allowances it’s possible to reduce the ultimate IHT liability substantially. However, this can be a bit of a balancing act as you need to make sure that you also keep sufficient for your own future needs.

Put things into trust

It’s worth considering putting some of your cash, investments or property into a trust, giving the potential for this to no longer form part of your estate for IHT purposes. It’s also possible to put a life policy in trust – while this doesn’t reduce the amount of IHT that will be due on your estate, the payment from the policy could make it easier for your beneficiaries to pay the IHT bill.
